INTERVIEW WITH JAN KROECKEL GENERAL MANAGER MÖVENPICK RESORT & SPA JIMBARAN BALI

author : , published : 15 July 2025

Congratulations on your new role! Can you tell us about your work and what it means to you to be the General Manager of Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali?
Thank you! What struck me right away was how warm and genuine everyone is here. We call our team members “Heartists” – and you can really feel that heart in the way they work and connect with people. I felt instantly welcomed as part of the Mövenpick Bali family. I’m genuinely excited to work alongside such a passionate team as we continue to improve our guest experience, grow the business, and bring new energy to the resort – including an upcoming beautiful new outdoor garden and event space that we plan to open soon.

You have had an extensive career in the hospitality industry. What would you consider your greatest achievement, and what do you believe is the key to your success?
Being appointed as General Manager of Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali, one of Bali’s leading five-star family resorts, is truly a proud moment in my career. For me, being a GM isn’t just about leading—it’s about staying grounded, being present for the team and our guests, and always staying curious. I believe in keeping an open mind, being unafraid to challenge the norm, and embracing mistakes as part of learning and growth. As Albert Einstein said, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.” That mindset continues to guide me every day.

Could you share any recent updates at Mövenpick Resort & Spa Jimbaran Bali, and what exciting experiences or venues can guests look forward to in the near future?
Bali is such a dynamic and competitive destination, which is why we’re always looking for new ways to enhance the guest experience. One of the exciting projects we’re working on is turning an unused garden area at the back of the resort into a beautiful outdoor space for events and activities. In the daytime, it’ll be a lively spot for fun and wellness – think volleyball, archery, or a peaceful yoga session. And in the evening, it’ll transform into a dreamy venue perfect for weddings and special celebrations. We can’t wait to share more with you soon, stay tuned!

Among the resort’s F&B outlets, including the new Adriana Cocina & Bar, is there a particular restaurant or signature dish that you would personally recommend to guests?
I absolutely love Adriana Cocina & Bar. Our Head Chef, Gerardo, is originally from Mexico, and he’s doing an amazing job bringing authentic Mexican flavors to life. It’s honestly hard to pick just one favorite, but I’d say the guacamole prepared fresh right at your table is a must try. I’m also a big fan of the jalapeño poppers and the grilled tenderloin fajitas – especially when paired with a frozen margarita or two!

What moments at work bring you the most joy or satisfaction?
One of the biggest challenges these days, especially after the pandemic, is finding the right talent. Hospitality often means long hours, weekends, and holidays – and not everyone’s up for that. But when you do find someone with the right mindset and heart, and you get to mentor and watch them grow, it’s incredibly fulfilling. Helping someone build a career in this industry brings me a lot of joy.

What influences your leadership style, and how do you keep your team motivated and inspired?
I see myself as a hands-on leader. I really enjoy walking around the resort, having conversations with guests and staff – just being present and approachable. I try to be visible every day and keep an open-door policy. I always encourage my team to try new things, think outside the box, and not be afraid to make mistakes. That’s how we learn and grow together.

How do you maintain a healthy work-life balance in such a dynamic and demanding role?
Work-life balance in this industry isn’t always easy, but it’s possible. Hotel life comes in waves – there are peak seasons when things get really intense, but there are also quieter times. I try to make the most of those moments by slowing down and spending time with the people I care about. It’s all about finding small pockets of balance wherever you can.
