INTERVIEW WITH SARASWATI SUBADIA GENERAL MANAGER THE WESTIN RESORT & SPA UBUD

author : , published : 19 November 2025

Congratulations on your new role! As one of the few Indonesian women leading a five-star Marriott International’s resort, what does this achievement mean to you personally and professionally?
Thank you. It’s truly an honor to be entrusted with this role. Personally, it’s a moment of gratitude of God’s grace, a reflection of the many people and experiences that have shaped me. Professionally, it represents both responsibility and opportunity: to continue growing the team, to uplift local talent, and to showcase the warmth and excellence of Indonesian hospitality on a global stage. I hope my journey can also encourage more women to step forward with confidence into leadership roles.

What inspired your journey into the hospitality industry, and how has your path shaped your leadership style today?
I was drawn to hospitality because it’s an industry built on people — on creating moments that matter. From my early days in sales and marketing, operations and to now leading a hotel, I’ve learned that success comes from empathy, teamwork, and consistency. My leadership style is collaborative and heart-centered — I believe in listening, empowering others, and leading by example with integrity, kindness and purpose.

The hospitality industry is often described as demanding and dynamic. What challenges have you faced as a woman in leadership, and how have you overcome them?
The biggest challenge has been balancing expectations, both professionally and personally. As women, we often feel the need to excel in every role we play. Over time, I learned that leadership isn’t about perfection; it’s about authenticity, resilience, and continuous learning. I’ve overcome challenges by building a strong support system, staying grounded in my values, and focusing on solutions rather than obstacles.

Could you share the latest updates from The Westin Resort & Spa Ubud?
We are continuously enhancing our guest experience while staying true to our wellness and sustainability pillars. Recently, we’ve introduced new programs that celebrate local culture and mindful living — from curated wellness retreats to authentic culinary journeys inspired by Ubud’s natural abundance. Our goal is to make every guest feel renewed and connected.

What moments at work bring you the most joy of fulfilment?
Seeing my team grow, that’s what brings me the greatest joy. Whether it’s witnessing someone’s first leadership opportunity or hearing positive guest feedback about our associates’ genuine care, those are the moments that remind me why I love what I do. Hospitality is about people serving people and when that connection happens, it’s incredibly fulfilling.

How do you maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life?
Balance for me comes from being intentional — setting boundaries, nurturing self-care, and staying spiritually centered. I find peace in quiet mornings, nature walk, morning cycling, and quality time with loved ones. I’ve also learned that balance doesn’t mean equal time, but being fully present wherever you are at work or at home.

From your own journey, what advice would you give to young women who aspire to build a successful career in hospitality or leadership?
Believe in your worth and trust the process. Every experience, even the challenging ones is shaping you for something greater. Stay curious, stay humble, and always lead with heart. Success isn’t only about reaching the top, but about growing through every step with integrity and compassion.
